History of the Derby della Madonnina

The derby between Inter Milan and AC Milan is known as the Derby della Madonnina. It is named after the statue of the Virgin Mary on top of the Duomo, which is known as the Madonnina. AC Milan was founded in 1899. Inter Milan came about in 1908 after a rift within AC Milan. A difference of opinion about allowing foreign players led part of the members to separate and continue as Inter Milan.

During the early years, the Milanese clubs rarely played against each other. It wasn’t until the introduction of the national competition in 1926 when the clubs started facing each other at least twice a year. The rivalry increased significantly during the 1960s, when both clubs grew into absolute superpowers in international football. AC Milan won the European Cup II in 1963, followed by Inter Milan in 1964 and 1965. After Inter Milan lost the final in 1967, AC Milan once again became the best in Europe in 1969. It led to fierce duels between the two and a heavily contested national title, the Scudetto.

Following 2010, there were some difficult years for both clubs. Juventus FC was untouchable in Serie A with nine consecutive titles. Inter had to settle for 9^th place in 2013, while AC Milan didn’t manage to do better than 10^th place in 2015. After these years of struggling, both Milanese clubs are back on top. Inter Milan celebrated their 19^th title in 2021. AC Milan couldn’t afford to stay behind and won their 19^th Scudetto in 2022 too. This also returned the Derby della Madonnina to its former glory. Inter Milan vs. AC Milan: the most memorable encounters

May 11^th, 2001: Inter Milan – AC Milan 0 – 6

The clubs from Milan only had supporting roles in Serie A during the 2000-2001 series. Both were in the sub-top on the 30^th day, behind eventual champion AS Roma by 20 points. Still, it turned into an unforgettable derby. I Rossoneri delivered the biggest victory in the history of the Milanese duel. Within as little as two minutes, Comandini got the red-blacks ahead by 1-0. 15 minutes later, the offense player also realised a score of 2-0. They were the only two goals Comandini scored while playing for AC Milan. After half-time, a tragedy unfolded for Inter. Giunti, Shevchenko twice and Serginho completed the half-dozen goals. At the end of the season, Inter Milan came in barely ahead of their fellow city team, but this was a beating by their arch-rival the supporters have still not forgotten.

April 12^th, 2005: Inter Milan – AC Milan 0 – 3

In 2005, Inter Milan and AC Milan met each other in the quarter finals of the Champions League. The first duel was won by AC Milan by 2-0. The return, once again at San Siro, was a duel with a deadly tempo. The red-blacks were out to deal a decisive blow as soon as possible. After half an hour of play, they succeeded. Shevchenko scored the 0-1 goal. This meant Inter had to score as many as four.

They first seemed to manage in the 70^th minute, when Cambiasso headed in the 1-1. Strangely, the goal was disqualified and the shooter received a yellow card. The home audience exploded. Dozens of rockets and torches were launched into the penalty area from the stand behind the goal. Goalkeeper Dida was hit in the process, inflicting first degree burns to the Brazilian. The match was only resumed half an hour later, without Dida but with substitute Abbiati. But less than a minute later, the rockets started flying onto the field again. Referee Merk called it quits. AC Milan won the duel by 0-3 per regulations, meaning it continued to the semi-finals with a total score of 5-0. The Rossoneri then went on to make it to the final, but lost it to Liverpool FC after penalties.

January 26^th, 2021: Inter Milan – AC Milan 2- 1

A bizarre derby in the quarter finals of the Coppa Italia which was won by Inter Milan during the last seconds. However, there was only one topic of conversation afterwards: the red card for Zlatan Ibrahimović. Of all players, it was he who had placed Inter at 1-0 and became the oldest goal scorer in the history of the derby at 39 years and 115 days. Shortly after, the Swede was given a yellow card for a minor foul, which ended up costing him dearly.

At half-time, a row suddenly broke out between Ibrahimović and Lukaku. The Belgian was furious and had to be calmed down by his teammates. Both parties involved in the fight were given a yellow card, which meant the Swede was told to hit the showers. In a twist of events, it was Lukaku who scored the equalising goal by penalty after half-time. Both teams prepared for overtime, but Christian Eriksen changed all that. The substitute scored an amazing goal using a free kick in the 98^th minute. This meant the game was over and the press could focus on the duel between Zlatan and Lukaku.

• Javier Zanetti played the highest number of derbies for Inter. The Argentinian faced AC Milan no fewer than 47 times between 1995 and 2014. Giuseppe Bergomi (44) and Giacinto Facchetti (40) also played many Derby della Madonninas. However, the record holder is Paolo Maldini of AC Milan (56 derbies).
• The duel on November 6^th, 1949 saw the highest number of goals. Inter won their home game against AC Milan by 6-5.

Practical information

San Siro is situated in the eponymous neighbourhood of West Milan, at about five kilometres of the city centre. It is easily accessible by public transport.

The easiest way to reach it is by metro. From the Piazza Del Duomo in the heart of the city, you take the red metro line 1 (stop Duomo) and get off after ten minutes at the stop Lotto Fieramilanocity. Here, you transfer to the purple line 5 and travel to the stop San Siro Stadio in five minutes. From here, it is 350 metres to the football stadium.

The tram is a good option as well. Tram 16 rides through the centre and also has a stop west of Piazza Duomo. The tram travels to its final destination San Siro Stadio in half an hour.

Inter Milan’s logo

Inter Milan is currently using its 15^th logo. Since they were founded in 1908, it has used several different designs. Most striking was the logo that graced the shirt from 1978 to 1988: a shield with a white snake on it.

The current logo, which was introduced in 2021, is in part a return to the first logo from 1908. That one consisted of a circle with the letters F, C, I and M (FC Internazionale Milano). This visual brand was visible in 9 of the 15 logos. For the first time in history, the letters F and C were omitted in 2021. According to club management, Inter Milan is more than just a football club. It is a brand which can be promoted and publicised beyond football too. The centre of the circle now also shows the letters I and M. In addition to being short for ‘Inter Milano’, the letters also represent ‘I am’ (I am Inter).
